THE old Zambian Kwacha will, in less than 12 hours, cease to be legal tender in the country and will no longer be accepted for exchange.
Bank of Zambia Governor Denny Kalyalya said in a statement that the cessation of the legal tender status of the banknotes takes effect tomorrow.
“Pursuant to the Bank of Zambia (Withdrawal and Exchange of Currency) Regulations, 2025, the Bank of Zambia hereby notifies the public that, with effect from April 1, 2026, the old banknotes shalll.Cease to be legal tender within the Republic; an not be accepted for exchange,” Dr Kalyalya said.
The Central Bank expressed its sincere appreciation for the cooperation of the public, the business community, banks, and NATSAVE during the currency transition process, which has run from March 31, 2025, to March 31, 2026.
“The Bank also takes this opportunity to reiterate its commitment to maintaining a secure and efficient national currency,” Dr Kalyalya said.
